Country Club Real Estate for Sale

The Roots of Community: Affluence and Influence

The history of Edina foreshadowed its status today as a community of luxury homes and high-value real estate. In 1921, before Edina became famous for elegant homes, a writer noted that a portion of the village was "a mecca that drew from all parts many men of affluence and influence." In a guest book at one famous property in Edina one could find, he wrote, "familiar names of people of many walks: professional men and women, business folk, artists, writers and theatrical performers. They came from many places."

The writer was Frank D. Tomson, writing in The Breeder's Gazette, an influential Chicago-based periodical for cattle breeders. His subject was Browndale Farm. Browndale was the farm of Henry F. Brown, which once occupied much of what is now the Country Club neighborhood in Edina. Tomson reminisced about the years when Browndale was home to one of the premier herds of Shorthorn cattle in the United States. Henry Brown, who maintained his primary residence in downtown Minneapolis, owned Browndale from the 1870s and also purchased the Edina Mill in 1889. His Shorthorns had won the $1,000 sweepstakes prize for best herd of any breed at the World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago in 1893. Click here to read more...

Everything First Class

Browndale Farm also raised award-winning Shropshire sheep, Poland China swine, and Clydesdale and Percheron horses. Mr. Brown apparently had no penchant for small animals. The former Maine resident who made his fortune in Minnesota lumber and land speculation also believed in doing nearly everything first class. The Minneapolis Tribune reported on November 22, 1868, for instance, that Henry Brown's new downtown Minneapolis residence was the first in the city to have hot and cold running water throughout the house.

The success of the Country Club district later in the 1920s owes a great deal to Henry Brown retaining his large farm until his death in 1912. It was one of the few large acreages in Edina that was reasonably flat and amenable to subdivision in a carefully planned community. The great success of Country Club relied in large measure on its sheer scale as a planned community.

In 1922, The Breeders' Gazette reported on plans for the renowned farm. "Old-time cattle breeders," it reported, "will be interested in knowing that the famous Browndale Farm on Minnehaha Creek near Minneapolis, Minn., for many years the home of one of the most noted herds of Shorthorn cattle in the United States, the property of the late Henry F. Brown, has been sold to a syndicate to be subdivided at a cost of $1,000,000 and closed out as sites for homes."

And what luxurious homes they would become.  Read our blog post regarding additional history of Country Club.
